Honest limits

MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security purposes (collisions are practical). They are fine for checksums and fingerprints — never for password storage.

How to use the MD5 Hash Generator

  1. Type or paste text into the box — MD5, SHA-1, and SHA-256 update live as you type.
  2. Toggle Uppercase hex if the system you're pasting into expects uppercase digests.
  3. Copy any digest with its Copy button, or choose a file to hash its raw bytes (the file never leaves your browser).

Examples

Example

Paste abc → MD5 900150983cd24fb0d6963f7d28e17f72 (a standard RFC 1321 test vector — matching it proves the implementation is correct).

What this tool doesn't do

  • MD5 and SHA-1 are cryptographically broken — fine for checksums and fingerprints, never for passwords, signatures, or anything adversarial.
  • Even SHA-256 is too fast for password storage; use bcrypt, scrypt, or Argon2id for passwords.
  • Very large files take a moment — hashing is CPU work done in your browser.
  • SHA-1 and SHA-256 use the Web Crypto API, which requires a secure context (HTTPS or localhost); MD5 always works since it's computed in pure JavaScript.
